The Legislature will begin to tackle its most far-reaching proposal this year – a potential rewrite of the state constitution – on Tuesday.

The House and Governmental Affairs Committee will begin the work, and it will be armed with an initial set of recommendations from Gov. Jeff Landry’s transition team on how to change the current constitution.

That team chiefly wants lawmakers to consider moving parts of the constitution that govern the state’s judiciary -- such as rules for state appeals courts, parish district attorneys and the Judiciary Commission -- to statute, which means lawmakers may change it later without a vote of the public.
